The Decline of History in Our School Curriculum

James Rees, Executive Director of the historical site at George Washington’s home, Mount Vernon, recently wrote a short letter but important letter about a recent report on the decline of history instruction in public schools.

As we get ready to celebrate our nation’s independence, I am going to make Mr. Rees’ letter and the actual report (available by clicking the "Findings and Recommendations" link on the Web page) part of my celebratory efforts. I invite you to do the same.

Keep'm dumb and they won't know enough to challenge the establishment! Ahhhhh, yes, the dumbing down of America. Consider what we as a society and taxpayers put up with.

It's working.

The decay of history instruction in our schools is working to the detriment of the country, but that can change if people start to tell legislators that enough is enough.

Bills pushing civic literacy have been raised in the legislature, for example, which is one hopeful sign that some of our elected officials are starting to get it because Kentuckians are concerned and beginning to speak out. Be sure your legislator hears it from you, too.
