In a Lexington debate between Kentucky Club for Growth Chairman Warren Rogers and AFL-CIO of Kentucky President Bill Londrigan about card check legislation this morning, Bluegrass Institute founder Chris Derry asked about Londrigan's opinion of doing away with secret ballots in public elections.
Londrigan drew an analogy to widespread use of mail-in ballots and asked "is that undermining the democracy?"

Mail-in ballots should be more available. Boards of Elections should be allowed to require a valid Social Security Number to verify that the registered voter is a resident of that county.
Boards of Elections should have the resources to verify reported deaths so that Social Security Numbers of deceased persons can be purged from voter registration roles. This should be an on-going and daily job.
The goal of democracy is greater citizen participation. That's anathema to the conservative agenda, which is less citizen participation.
People should not have to wait in long lines for hours to vote. That amounts to a poll tax.
With a growing population it's unreasonable to expect local government to have the resources to buy enough voting machines to accommodate a large voter turnout, and then have those machines sit idle for a year or two before being used again. That's another reason for mail-in paper ballots.
How do you know who voted when a mail-in ballot is counted? Did the parents fill out the 18+ year old child's ballot? Did someone steal the ballots out of the mailbox on the day that they were mailed to the voters? Did someont steal the ballots out of the mailbox as they were mailed back? Did someone pickup all the ballots at the nursing home and fill them out themselves? I could go on and on, but you get the point. Except for people who can't physically get to the pole, everone should go to the pole. Conservatives don't want less participation, we just want to know that our legal ballot is not being canceled by someone not entitled to vote casting and illegal ballot. I agree about the long lines being a disincentive to vote, but I think it would be interesting to see which party that impacts more. Rather than allowing a mail-in free for all with no posibility of voter verification, maybe polling places should be open for several days for an election.
