You had me at non-essential

Louisville Mayor Jerry Abramson announced plans Friday to let go enough non-essential government employees for three days to save $2 million.

Let's see: 2,000,000 times 365 divided by 3 equals $243,333,333.

Hmmm...

Rather than laying off workers, why not put churches on property tax rolls? They get free government services such as police and fire protection, road maintenance, upkeep and repair as any other business, so why shouldn't they pay taxes?

Too, a number of religions have degenerated into nothing more than political organizations championing this or that candidate, or trying to use the political process to impose their anti-American values on others who don't share those values.

Many religions are not supporters of American values. Liberty and justice are two American values that organized religion has declared political war against.

So, in addition to their free ride at the taxpayer's expense and their self-imposed politicalization, it seems only fair and just that organized religion start paying their fair share of taxes--like the rest of us.

Government employees should not be the ones paying for organized religion's free ride.

Ok Hempy, I don't know where you attend church or what area you are referring to, but in my neighborhood the churches pay for their own road maintenance, upkeep, and repairs. They do this through donations from members and through fund raising events. If there are enough non-essential employees to yeild $2million from them being layed off for three days, someone needs to re-evaluate what those jobs are and what could be combined or eliminated entirely. The 10% pay cut the higher officials are going to take starting January 2009 is a good starting point, maybe it will be the begining of the elected officials actually making a normal wage. Nah, I would have to be dreaming.
