Quote of the day: Education reform

"Enacting reform is difficult. There is a huge difference between the theory of reform and the reality of it -- it is a lot harder than it looks. It requires full transparency, unyielding tenacity, continuous communication, relentless advocacy, and the courage to measure progress and then deal with the results, whatever they may be." --Jeb Bush, former governor of Florida

I grew up in Florida during the Jeb Bush administration. He was criticized by teachers when he reined in on accountability and performance, but he stuck to his plan. And now Florida's education system is one of the most highly touted after a series of reforms and an emphasis on meritocracy, accountability, and parental choice. Kentucky could sure learn some valuable lessons if we paid attention to the Sunshine State. Instead, we stick to repeating our own mistakes.

Amen to Southern Liberty. Florida has indeed posted remarkable progress. They were behind Kentucky on national testing back when KERA began. Now, they match us despite lots more minority and English as a second language students.

Governor Beshear, Commissioner Holliday, Carl Rollins, etc. please notice the adjectives in the quote:

"full transparency, unyielding tenacity, continuous communication, relentless advocacy, and the courage to measure progress and then deal with the results"

Not just words - but a passion to face reality straight on to get the job done.

Not exactly the description of Kentucky's leadership power players, with their hands on all the controls, to reform Kentucky's K-12 public education.
